Tech Through the 2000's

  • USB Drives

    USB Drives
USB drives were invented in 1996 by Ajay Bhatt, who was an employee for Intel, but they didn't become commercially available until 2000. The purpose of a USB (Universal Serial Bus) was to make connecting information from one computer to another much easier. Prior to the USB there was no compact, easily portable way to do this.
  • iPod

    iPod
Created by Steve Jobs, the iPod sought to give people a portable MP3 player that had a decent capacity for holding songs. The first iPod had 5gb and could hold 1000 songs on it. It also could transfer songs from a computer much faster, about 525 in 5 minutes, but was only compatible with Mac computers.
  • Blu-Ray

    Blu-Ray
Blu-Ray was developed by the Blu-Ray Disc Foundation. They sought to make a disc that could store more information on it than others on the market. Along with holding more data, Blu-Ray discs are read by a blue laser which works at a shorter wavelength so that it can process information more precisely.
  • Nintendo Wii

    Nintendo Wii
Nintendo had been working with the idea for the Wii since the launch of the Gamecube in 2001. The console was revolutionary for the fact that the remotes did not need to be connected via cable and they had motion detectors, making playing a game more physically immersive. The Wii is Nintendo's best selling console of all time, selling over 100 million units.
  • iPhone

    iPhone
The iPhone was developed by Steve Jobs and Apple and was released in 2007. It was the first touchscreen device you could interact with just using your fingers. Other touchscreens at the time required a stylus to interact with. The iPhone also did away with the physical key pad that most cell phones at the time had, instead opting to make it part of the software you could interact with.
