THE ORIGIN OF TARAPOTO- Legend
When the Spaniards arrived, they exterminated all their native inhabitants except for one man and one woman who took refuge in the hills, the god Apu turned them into a sturdy bull and a beautiful butterfly.
The bull cried so much that his tears became the Shilcayo River and the beautiful butterfly became the "Suchiche" lagoon that is the origin of Tarapoto. -

DISCOVERY and CONQUEST
It began with the entry of the Spaniards in 1537, by the north of our region, from Chachapoyas to Moyabamba. Hernando de Alvarado, with the support of the cacique Huamán, managed to dominate the natives of the region -
COLONIZATION
After the conquest, Franciscan and Jesuit missionaries continued to colonize Hispanics in the jungle and catechize the inhabitants of the region.
In 1769, the king of Spain ordered the expulsion of the Jesuits from Peru and consequently the Peruvian Amazon. This led to the confusion and destruction of Aboriginal identity. -
FOUNDATION
The bishop of Trujillo, gathering together all the scattered native groups, founded with them the Spanish city of the Holy Cross of the Motilones of Tarapoto, on August 20, 1782, under the jurisdiction of the priest of the Lamas he sets builds the church of the city of Tarapoto. -
