Upgraded to SSR
Tajikistan is upgraded from an ASSR (Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic) to an SSR (Soviet Socialist Republic). Allowed for direct access to Soviet resources. -
Collectivization
The Tajik Agricultural collectivization begins despite widespread resistence. This added to the heightening of tensions between Tajiks and the Soviet union. -
Cotton Production
Tajikistan is now the 3rd largest cotton producing republic in the USSR. Heavy industries are now introduced, mainly aluminum. This lowered tensions caused by collecitization as Tajiks could now enjoy a better quality of living. -
Increased Islamic Influence
Islamic influences in Tajikistan increase. This causes violence toward non-indigenous nationalities. This greatly increased tensions between Tajiks and Athiest Soviets. -
Riots
As tensions escalate between Tajiks and Soviets, due to the amount of disparity in beliefs, riots erupt. Some 13,000 Tajiks attended Anti-Russian Riots. This added to the ever increasing amount of tension. -
Political Interests
The leader of the Soviet Union, Mikhail Gorbachev, and his policy of Glasnost (Openness), lead to changes in Tajik politics. These changes include the formation of several unnofficial political parties, all with a renewed interest on the preservation of Tajik culture. -
Reform
The Supreme Soviet in Tajikistan (Legislature), declares Tajik to be the officail language. This shows a Tajik desire to distance themselves from Soviet culture, and also the first step to complete independence. This lowers tension between the Soviet Union and Tajikistan due to the preservation of Tajik culture. -
Civil War
A state of emergency is declared and 5,000 Soviet troops are sent to the Tajik Capital to suppress pro-democracy protests. Supreme Soviet declares State Sovereignty. This heightens Tajik-Soviet tensions. -
Makhkamov Resigns
The Tajik communist leader is forced to resign after supporting the failed anti-Gorbachev coup in Moscow. Supreme Soviet declares Tajikistan independent of Soviet rule. Rahmon Nabiyev wins first Tajik presidential election.
