  • The Boeing 747, Jumbo Jet.

    The Boeing 747, Jumbo Jet.
    The Boeing 747 is famously known as jumbo jet or the largest civilian airplane in the world, constructed in the late 1960s. The jet eventually took off a few months later, on February 9th, 1969. The jumbo jet could hold up to 374 - 490 passengers, not including staff.
  • The Clarkson group.

    The Clarkson group was the number one tour operator in the UK, in the 1970’s and 1960’s. The Clarkson group supplied many package holidays before they went into liquidation in early 70’s, just like many other big tour operators, for example, Thomas Cook.
  • Concorde.

    Concorde.
    Concorde was the first supersonic airplane that passengers, built jointly in the UK and France. The Concorde made its first journey on September 26th in 1973, that travelled completely with no passengers, the Concorde made its first journey with passengers with British airways and Air France on the 21st of January 1976. Just twenty years later the Concorde was no more after leaving in 2003 due to financial issues.
  • Increase of package holidays.

    In 1980’s the increase of package holidays was on the uprise, with more people wanting to book a package holiday rather than just a holiday. A package holiday means that you will get everything included for example, your flights, your accommodation, and your transportation all in one package. An example of a tour operator that offered package holidays in the 1980’s is Thomas Cook.
  • The launch of Ryan Air.

    Ryan Air was officially launched in 1985, with a team of just 25. Ryan Air’s first flight was a 15-seater airplane, that traveled from the south of Ireland, Waterford to London Gatwick. To be one of Ryan Air’s cabin crew you had to fit the height restrictions, that was no taller than 5’3.
  • The birth of the Internet.

    The “World Wide Web” or the internet as we know today was created in 1989, by a British scientist Tim Berners-Lee. Tim Berners-Lee, invented the internet and the first website while working at CERN. Without Tim Berners-Lee inventing the internet the whole of the population today would go crazy, due to him creating the internet we can now do anything and everything by ease, for example, book a holiday, online shopping, and research everything we would possibly want to know to the web.
  • No-frills airlines.

    No-frills airlines was very popular in the 1990’s as their a cheap and easy way to travel the world. No-frills airlines are the exact same as budget airlines that aren’t very expensive and the duration isn’t for very long, for example Ryan Air as they are a low cost airline, if you book with Ryan Air you normally stay no longer than a week.
  • The Channel tunnel.

    The Channel tunnel is the longest under sea tunnel in the world, it is also the biggest engineering projects in the UK! The Channel tunnel took more than five years to build, with more than 13,000 workers from the UK and France. The Channel tunnel was built to travel with ease and to make a direct link between the UK and France.
  • The birth of EasyJet.

    The birth of EasyJet.
    The birth of EasyJet was in March 1995, the founder of EasyJet is Sir Stelios Haji-loannou. EasyJet was created to promise low-fare flights to Europe, EasyJet wants to keep this promise to “making flying as affordable as a pair of jeans.” To this day Easy jet still lives up to this promise.
  • 9/11

    9/11
    9/11 is a tragic terrorist attack that happened on the Twin Towers in New York, on September 11th, 2001.This attack shook the nation and the travel industry leading to tighter security checks everywhere, not just airports.The attack happened because a group of Terrorist's hijacked four planes originally, but only two made it to the twin towers.Today the towers are turned into a memorial site, where visitors can find out some great information and morn the lives that were lost that day.
  • The Indian Ocean Earthquake and Tsunam

    The Indian Ocean Earthquake and Tsunami happened on the 26th of December 2004. This was a huge disaster that caused a mass of destruction when an earthquake caused a large Tsunami, that had waves up to 30m tall, wiping out a total of 14 countries, Thailand and Indonesia was greatly affected the most. Due to this mass of destruction, we lost many lives due to the Earthquake and Tsunami.
  • The birth and growth of Social Media.

    In todays world you would be lost without social media, people these days can’t go one day without tweeting, sharing or even snapshotting anything, me being one of them. You can do anything with social media, update your social status and even your relationship status with one click of a button. As a teenager here are some key events In social media, the invention of Facebook in 2004, by Mark Zuckerberg. And most importantly the invention of Instagram in 2010.
  • Icelandic Ash cloud.

    Icelandic Ash cloud.
    The Icelandic Ash cloud was volcanic eruptions in Eyjafjallajökull, in 2010. Due to this volcanic eruption the ash cloud weakened the air space in Europe, in fear that the ash cloud would damage the airplane's engines if the pilot travelled through it.
  • The Arab spring.

    In 2011 the Arab spring in Egypt had a huge effect on the UK Brits, traveling to the country. The numbers was on a rapid decline dropping from 47,000 in 2018, from a very high of 186,000 in 1996. This issue may have been due to the deadly terrorist attack in Sharm El Sheikh.
  • Brexit.

    On June 23rd, 2016 the UK held a vote, to stay in the EU or leave it. This then lead to 51.89% of UK brits, wanting to leave the EU. On the 31st January 2020, the UK left the EU. Due to this . Due to this issue the main thing the UK have lost is our imported goods, delicacies such as meat, fruit and cheeses, will forever be a loss in the UK.
  • Covid 19

    Covid 19
    Covid 19 is a deadly virus that has affected millions all over the globe. The virus has been known to be bit like the flu and people with the virus can show symptoms of the following a high fever, a cough and a loss of taste and smell. Covid 19 had a huge effect on the travel and tourism industry, that huge travel will never be the same again. Due to covid 19 the people arriving to the UK dropped from 6,804,900 people to a drastic 112,300 people, and other aspects of travel was greatly affected.
