  • The Currency Act

    The Currency Act
    Required all currency circulating at the time of the act be taken our of circulation on the dates specified in the colonial laws under which the paper money was issued.
    The colonists hated it because they were prohibited from printing their own money.
    The British government sought to protect British merchants and creditors from being paid in depreciated currency.

  • Sugar Act

    Sugar Act
    Reduced the earlier molasses tax’s rate and expanding enforcement
    Colonists reacted with great resistance considering it a violation of their rights to be taxed without their consent
    The British Government reaction was to pass high tax on the colonies and molasses imported from non-British islands

  • Stamp Act

    Stamp Act
    Printed materials in the colonies must be on stamped paper from London, with an embossed revenue stamp
    Colonists reacted with resistance considering it a violation of rights to be taxed without their consent
    Delegates of the Stamp Act Congress drafted the Declaration of Rights and Grievances,declaring that taxes imposed on British colonists without their formal consent was unconstitutional.

  • Townshend Acts

    Townshend Acts
    A series of laws passed by the British government on the American colonies. They placed new taxes on imports of paper, paint, lead, lead, glass, and tea
    Colonists being taxed without their voice. Money was going to pay for British royal governor salaries.
    The British government thought the colonists should help pay the cost of their protection.

  • Tea Act

    Tea Act
    Restored the East India Company’s full refund on the duty for importing tea into Britain
    Colonists objected to the Tea Act for a variety of reasons, especially because they believed that it violated their right to be taxed only by their own elected representatives
    The British government felt this action could not remain unpunished; they responded by closing the port of Boston and putting in place other laws known as the “Coercive Acts”
