The day of mourning
It is a day to argue the British colonisation of Australia. It is a protest led by aboriginals for 150 years of racism and the loss of land and also is on the same day as Australia day. -
Granting the federal vote
Commonwealth Electoral Act said that indigenous people should have the right to vote at federal elections. Was illegal under commonwealth legislation to encourage indigenes to vote. W.A extended the state vote to everyone. 1338 aborigines enrolled to vote in the northern territory. -
freedom riders
inspired by freedom riders of the American civil rights movement students from the University of Sydney made a group called students action for aborigines led by Charles Perkins. This group protested, picketed and faces violence bringing the issue or indigenous rights. Eventually a referendum passed in 1967 removing discriminatory sections from the Australian constitution. -
Referendum
A Referendum approved Commonwealth Constitutional change. This amendment allowed Indigenous people to be counted in the Commonwealth Census. Section 51 of the Constitution was amended to allow the Commonwealth to make special laws for Indigenous people. Both Houses of the Parliament passed the proposed Act unanimously; consequently a 'No' case was not submitted. More than 90% of Australians registered a YES vote with all six states voting in favour -
Vincent lingiari & land rights
Mr Lingiari led a walk off where everybody just stopped what they were doing and started protesting against work and conditions. The protesters established the wattie creek camp and demanded the return of their traditional lands. Lingiari said “we want to live on our land, our way” -
Tent Embassy
four aboriginal men came to Canberra from Sydney to start an aboriginal embassy, they started by planting a beach umbrella on the lawn of the parliament house. The embassy was created in response to McMahon coalition government’s refusal to recognise aboriginal lands rights. -
Eddie mabo case
Eddie led a group of the Meriam people in a Supreme Court case against the Queensland government to try and get a land ownership their case stated. ”Since time immemorial the Torres Strait Islands of the Mer (known as Murray), Danar and Waier and their surrounding seas, seabeds, fringing reefs and adjacent islets have been continuously inhabited by people called the Meriam people” -

Don Watson has claimed ownership of the speech. This speech was about the hardship that the Europeans brought onto the aboriginal people and that we was responsible for the deaths and the taking of the children and that we practiced the discrimination it was out ignorance and prejudice. -
Bringing them home report
This report is to acknowledge the strength and struggles of many thousands of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people affected by force removal. We acknowledge the hardships they endured and the sacrifices they made. We remember and lament all the children who will never come home. -
