Financial Troubles
After the Seven Years war and the American Revolution France was left in debt.bad harvest made prices rise and half the governments income form taxes went to the debt. -
Estates General
Louis XVI asked the three estates to make cahiers that said what they wanted to change. A lot of them said they wanted fairer taxes, freedom of the press ,and regular meetings of the estates. -

everyone was divided into 3 estates.
1st estate; clergy
2nd estste; nobility
3rd estste; everyone else( peasants and bourgeisie) -
political revolt
rumors spread about attacts on villages. peasants attacted and set fire to old manor records. Modeerates asked Marquis de Lafayette to help them out. -
Parisians storm the Bastille
around 800 parisians waited outside the bastille demanding weapons and gunpowder. the commander shot into the crowd and killed many people. the crowd killed the commander and five guards and released prisoners. -

late august, the assembley issued the Declaration of the Rights or Man. all men were declared equal. -
National Assembly Act
The assembly issued the Declaration of Rights of Man and the Citizen. this document declared euality for all men. it said nothing about the equality of women. -
Threats Come From Abroad
th eking of Prussia and the emperor of Austria issued the Declaration of Pilnitz that said they will intervene to protect the french monarchy. the revolutionaries in french took this threat seriously and prepared for war. -
Womens March
about six thousands women marched to Versallies demanding to see the king. most of the people were mad at Marie Antoinette because she lived in great pleasure and didnt care that her people were starving. everyone refused to leave unless the king returned to Paris. The king and queen were then virtual prisoners. -
The Reign of Terror
The Convention created the Committee of Public Saftey that consist of 12 members. -
Monarchy is Abolished
Parisians stormed the royal place of Tuileries and killed th ekings guards. the royal family escaped to the Legislative Assembly. Later citizens attacked prisons and killed nobles and priest. Radicals called for a new legislative called the National Convention. they abolished manarchy and developed a republic. they put Louis XVI on trial for being a trator and he was executed in january 1793. Marie antoinette was then executed in october -

The Constitution of 1795 set up a five man Directory and two house legislature elected by male citizen of property. -
Revolution Brings Change
the ten year French Revolution dislodged the social order, overthrown monarchy and brought the church control. Red "liberty caps" symbolized equality. then the people of FRance had a strong sense of National Identity.
