The First Fleet
The 'First Fleet' was a fleet of 11 ships who arrived in Port Jackson (Sydney) in 1788. The ships held about 780 English criminals whose punishment was to live in Australia for the rest of their lives. Many of the settlers weren't familiar with the climate and nature in Australia. They didn't know how to farm and that made many people nearly starve to death. The settlers tended to loose their accents and because of that, there are few differences in accent and word usage in Australia.
