Hero's Steam Engine
Hero created a simple childlike toy that would spin a ball when heated, this design had an extremely high chance of exploding spectacularily. -
The Heat Engine
French scientist Denis Papin desiined the very first steam engine, it was the first engine to use heat. Papin did not pursue this line of investigation because he had difficulty producing the large drum that the water was heated in. -
The Savory Engine
The first successful steam engine, invented by Thomas Savery, was the first steam engine to accomplish work. The pump was far too weak to be of practical use at the time but it was the first to be available. It was used to lift water from mines. -
The Newcomen Engine
Thomas Newcomen used the next generation of heat being converted into energy. The engine was extremely impractical because of the sheer size. The engine required huge amounts of heat in order to function. -
The Watt Engine
James Watt was asked to repair a Newcomen engine. He saw the act of heating and cooling in the same tube as extremely inneficient. He designed a steam engine that used two differernt tubes in order to increse efficiency. The Watt engine was extremely large, and quite hot to work with.
