  • The 1921 ban

The 1921 ban was when the 10th party congress established a ban on factories within the communist party as well as a ban on opposition parties in the soviets that occurred because of the capitalist ideas that were brought back when Lenin adopted the NEP. This was important for stalin's rise in power because later, when Zinoviev and Kamenev formed the united opposition, Stalin was able to ban their meetings and dismiss their supporters accusing them of factionalism thus resulting in more power.

Kamenev, Zinoviev and stalin formed an alliance by the name of Triumvirate ( and became the triumvirs) in attempt to prevent Trotsky from becoming powerful and obtaining the most support. Trotsky ,out of the three, was the one that was mostly thought to replace Lenin if he died which caused a lot of people to dislike him. This was important because slowly stalin began to replace Trotsky's supporters with those of the triumvirs which led Trotsky to creating the left opposition (opposing them).

His testament defined the strengths and weaknesses of all the leading communists to affect the best successor. His postscript urged Stalin’s removal. It’s importance was that the legacy Lenin wanted, wasn’t accomplished. These were kept a secret, and when published, made no difference. It proved the power Stalin had, since not even Lenin’s wishes could remove him at that point of power.

  • Triumvirs Split

    Triumvirs Split
Disagreements on the NEP, lead the triumvirs to split. This caused left (led by Zinoviev and Kamenev), centre and right (led by Bukharin) factions to emerge. Its importance was, that as Stalin lost some followers,he made new allies like Bukharin, that united and reassured Central Committee and Politburo to elect them as Stalinist-Bukharin's majority. This led Stalin to accuse Zinoviev of trotskyism and Zinovievists to lose their positions in the party, eliminating opposition and adding to his power

Zinoviev and Kamenev formed alliance with United Opposition .
In July 1926 the united opposition was formed. This meant an alliance between Zinoviev, Kamenev, Nadya Krupskaya ( Lenin’s Widow) and a few other members, all right wing supporters against Stalinist ideas. Stalin was able to stop their meetings and dismiss their supporters by accusing them of factionalism. This was significant because it eventually caused Zinoviev’s elimination from the politburo which strengthened Stallin, proving once again, he had the power to easily eliminate his opponents.
  • End of the United Opposition

Stalin managed to end the united opposition. Nadya, fearing the split of the communist party, made peace with Stalin. Also,Stalin was able to remove Zinoviev and Trotsky from the communist party and Kamenev from the Central committee. Finally, amused by the idea that Stalin was going to quit the NEP, they ended the left opposition. It’s importance was that later it led to a gap between Bukharinists and Stalinists over the NEP and caused the removal of Bukharinists from positions of power

    Bukharin and Trotsky consider Alliance
Trotsky and Bukharin wanted to restore party and soviet democracy resulting them to form an ‘alliance’.The right wing wanted the continuance of the NEP and opposed the left who didn’t.The left refused to ally with the right and prefered to ally with Stalin that seemed was going to apply some of their policies. Its importance was that Trotsky’s willingness to make such alliance ended in loss of his supporters. Bukharin, also surrendered and Stalin defeated both factions only with his supporters.
  • Trotsky was deported to Turkey & Bukharin removed from politburo

Trotsky was deported to Turkey & Bukharin removed from politburo
In fear of a left-right wing alliance and of his supporters turning against him, Stalin managed to deport Trotsky from the soviet union to Turkey and to remove Bukharin from the Politburo and from being the editor of Pravda (communist party newspaper). This was important because it secured Stalin's position seeing as to how Trotsky and Bukharin were Stalin's major opponents that represented 2 powerful factions stalin was able to defeat.
