The NCSS was created to emphasize the importance of Social Studies in education. By understanding history, people can better come to understand their past. -

The Great Depression occurred after the stock market crashed and lasted for some countries well into the 1940s. The Great Depression led to a shortage of income, jobs, etc. which caused living conditions to change.

Adolf Hitler was a main leader in World War 2 through his persecution and killing of Jews as well as those with disabilities. Jewish internment camps were created where people were tortured and brutally killed. Gas chambers were sometimes used to kill lots of people at once. Those who followed Hitler were called Nazis.

Pearl Harbor
Pearl Harbor was an attack that took place in Hawaii, USA. Bombs were dropped by the Empire of Japan, killing a large number of people. This event is what forced the United States to enter World War 2.

The Civil Rights movement emerged in the United States encompassing the issue of race. The debate focused mainly on the rights of people with white and black skin. People such as Martin Luther King, Jr. fought for a nation that would someday treat everyone as equals, regardless of skin color.

The first man in space proved for science and for history that there was more to explore beyond the Earth itself and that man had developed the technology to begin its exploration. -

Neil Armstrong was an astronaut from the United States of America who became the first man to land on the moon. This placed America ahead of the rest of the world in space travel and was a huge leap for mankind. -
Watergate
The Watergate Scandal led to a court case called United States vs. Nixon where the President of the United States, Richard Nixon was accused of improper conduct through the stealing of information. This eventually lead to his impeachment as President of the country. -

The United States government madate for schools called "No Child Left Behind" focused on mathematics and language arts with the goal of having every student on grade level across the country.

World Trade Center Attacks
9/11 sparked the beginning of what is now called the War on Terror. These attacks were brought about by the Taliban in Iraq who sent terrorists onto multiple airplanes. As the airplanes were overtaken by these terrorists, they crashed into the twin towers in New York, sending them crashing to the ground.
