Chapters 1-6, 1-49
The beginning of the book introduces Jonas and his family and how some of his life is controled by the Committee of Elders. Jonas's dad brings home a child from work and the name him Gabriel. Jonas and Asher then go to do community service, where Jonas meets Larissa. Jonas then starts getting the "Stirrings" and is required to take a pill every morning. The big ceremony where everyone moves an age group up happpens.

Chapter 7-11, Pages 50-87
Jonas's job now is the new Reciever and he begans training with the Reciever. All the rules change for Jonas though. The Reciever tells the memory of snow to Jonas. Jonas now calls the Reciever, the Giver. Pages: 50-87 Total: (1080) -
Chapter 12-18 Pages 88-145
Jonas recieves his first memory and starts to recognize colors. The Giver gives Jonas more memories. The Giver describes love. Jonas then transmits a memory to the Newborn, Gabriel, to stop him from crying. The Giver then tells Jonas about the last Reciever.

Jonas starts to learn what releasing really is. Jonas and the Giver come up with a plan to escape. The Giver then tells Jonas that he will stay behind because he is not in the best condition to travel with Jonas. The Giver will then tell everyone Jonas was lost in the river. Jonas and Gabriel escape quickly and ahead of schedule. He worries about himself and Gabe. Then they find a sled left for them and take off.
