Santiago's dream
"The boy's name was Santiago. Dusk was falling as the boy arrived with his herd at an abandoned church. The roof had fallen in long ago, and an enormous sycamore had grown on the spot where the sacristy had once stood." (ph1) This is where Santiago has the dream about the treasure and it is what started his personal legend. -
inheritance
Santiago wants to travel so his father gives him his inheritance early so he can buy some sheep and travel. "I found these one day in the fields. I wanted them to be a part of your inheritance." (pg11) -
Santiago talks to the dream reader
Santiago talks to the tream reader. The dream reader says "I only interpret dreams. I don’t know how to turn them into reality. That’s why I have to live off what my daughters provide me with.” (pg15) Th e dream reader tells Santiago that he has to make the dream happen. -
Santiago talks to the king
Santiago gets two rocks in return of sheep."Urim and Thummim. The black signifies ‘yes’ and the white ‘no’… Always ask an objective question… But if you can, try to make your own decisions." (pg31) These rocks will answer questionsa for him. -
Santiaago meets the shop keeper
"The boy had been working for the crystal merchant for almost a month, and he could see that it wasnt exactly the kind of job that would make him happy." (pg51) Santiago had met a shop owner and he gave him a job and Santiago made enough money to travel. -
Santiago meets the caravan
“I’ve crossed these sands many times,” said one of the camel drivers one night. “But the desert is so huge, and the horizons so distant, that they make a person feel small, and as if he should remain silent.” (pg76) Santiago is with the caravan who helps him find the Alchemist -
Santiago meets the Alchemist
The Alchemist encourages Santiago to go on in pursuit of his personal legend. “You must not let up, even after having come so far… You must love the desert, but never trust it completely. Because the desert tests all men: it challenges every step, and kills those who become distracted.” (pg117) -
The Alchemist teaches Santiago
“You will never be able to escape from your heart. So it’s better to listen to what it has to say. That way, you’ll never have to fear an unanticipated blow.” (pg136) The alchemist helps santiago listen to his heart which helps him make better decisions -
Santiago gets to Egypt
“Be aware of the place where you are brought to tears. That’s where I am, and that’s where your treasure is.” (pg168) Santiago gets to Egypt which is his personal legend and he soon realises what the true treasure is. -
Santiago Tries to become the wind
“You can’t be the wind,” the wind said. “We’re two very different things…That’s not true,” the boy said. “I learned the alchemist’s secrets in my travels. I have inside me the winds, the deserts, the oceans, the stars, and everything created in the universe. We were all made by the same hand, and we have the same soul.” (pg154) Santiago has to learn how to become the wind to save himslef and get away from the tribe. -
Santiago finds out the Alchemist knew where the treasure was
Santiogo finds the treasue at the church where he had started at. Santiago dug until he had hit something hard. (epilogue) -
Finds out the treasue is not in Egypt
Santiago finds out that the treasue is not in Egypt and he was only sent there to see its beauty. "Be aware of the place where you are brought to tears. That’s where I am, and that’s where your treasure is.” (pg168)
