    Foster William Hewitt
    Who: A Canadian sportscaster who broadcasted the first “Hockey Night in Canada”. He was also a reporter for the Toronto Star.
    What: First hockey broadcast was between the Toronto Argonauts and the Kitchener Greenshirts.

    Where: Mutual Street Arena and in later years, the Maple Leaf Gardens
    Why: He was significant in the 1920s because when he started broadcasting, NHL hockey became part of Canadian history and no one except for Hewitt had done broadcasts on radio before.

    Who: A Canadian female athlete who set many world records and won many medals.
    What: Won a gold medal for the 400m relay and a silver medal for the 100m sprint.

    Why: She was significant in the 1930s because she was one of Canada’s best and strong female athletes.

    Percy Alfred Williams
    Who: One of Canada’s greatest male athletes.
    What: He started as a sprinter in the Olympics, won 2 gold medals at one Olympic game and set a world record for the 100m dash race.
    When: Started Olympics in 1928 and set his 100m dash world record in 1930.
    Where: Olympic Games in Amsterdam
    Why: He was significant in the 1920s because Percy was a brave athlete who suffered chronic arthritic pain. His name is enshrined in the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame.

    James Cleveland "Jesse" Owens
    Who: An African American athlete who specialized in sprints.
    What: Won 4 gold medals while holding the world record until 1984.
    When: 1936
    Where: Olympic Games in Berlin, Germany
    Why: He was significant in the 1930s because Jesse was discriminated by his colour. He wasn’t able to get a scholarship for he was black. In honour of Black History Month, we never forget the greatest black athletes in history.
