Plessy vs. Ferguson
Plessy vs. Ferguson was handling the issue(s) of racial segregation.This also brought up the civil rights issue of "separate but equal" because although is the white people had a water fountain the Afreican amercans will have one too, but it'll be dirty and probably located in a horrible unsanitary place. Homer Plessy tried so hard to lower of take all racial segregation away that he was arrested. -
Thurgood Marshall
(July 2, 1908 – January 24, 1993) He was an associate of justice from 1967-1991. President Johnson nominated him to the United States supreme court in 1967, whch is how he became a lawyer. -
National association for the advancement of colored people
Also known as the NAACP, that was a African- American civil rights organization in the U.S. the NAACP was created in 1909. The mission of the NAACP was “to ensure the political, educational, social, and economic equality of rights of all persons and to eliminate racial hatred and racial discrimination”. which basically means that teir goal was to make sure their was no more racial discrimination. -
Frannie Lou Hamer
Frannie was an American voting rights activist and civil rights leader. she helped set up the Freedom Summer which helped the SNCC. She became the Vice-Chair of the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party, attending the 1964 Democratic National Convention in Atlantic City, NJ. -
Malcolm X
Malcom X was an African-American Muslim minister and human rights activist. To everyone that he knew or ever came into contact with they viewed him as having very strong feelings about how whites discriminated against black people. While in prison, Malcolm became a part of the Nation Of Islam. -
medgar evers
He was a civil rights activists from Mississippi. He not only participated in the civil rights movement he also particpated in World War 2. Because of his efforts toward the cicil rights movement Evers was assassinated by Beckwith on June 12, 1963 -
James Meredith
He is a civil rights activists, political adviser, and a writer. He was the first black man that was admitted into the Segregated University Of Mississippi. He kept participating in protests and everything like that against segregation to pressure Kennedy into supporting the cicil rights movement and doing something about it. -
Brown vs. board of education
United States Supreme Court case in which the Court declared state laws establishing separate public schools for black and white students unconstitutional. Warrens court stated that the school was "separate educational facilities are inherently unequal." The warren court also said that it was a violation of the fourteenth ammendment and called it unconstitutional. -
The montgomery bus boycott & Rosa parks
The montgomery Bus Boycott was a social and political protest about the discrimination agains African-Americans. The protest started when Rosa Parks denied a bus driver, when he told her to give up her seat for a white person and then was arrested because of it. Rosa Parks, was an African-American civil rights activist, in which the U.S. Congress called "the first lady of civil rights" and "the mother of the freedom movement". -
Southern Christian Leadership Conference
The Southern Christian Leadership Conference was created by Martin Luther King Jr. It was created to help with the civil rights movement and the de-segregation of african americans. The SCLC was basically a bunch of campaigns, speeches, arguements, and fights againts segregating African Americans. -
The Little Rock Nine
The little rock nine was a group of nine students, who volunteered to be the first African-Americans to enter into an all white people school. The students were initially denied entry into the high school because of the governor, Orval Faubus, but later they were allowed to go into the school with the help of the national guard and president, Eisenhower. -
Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee
SNCC was one of the movement to eliminate segregation of the blcaks and whites. Sit ins where also coordinated with the frredom rides, which was when people rode across the states protesting about civil rights. -
Civil Rights act of 1964
the act outlawed discrimination and segregation upon people. The required people to get votes because of segregation in schools and stuff like that. -
Freedom Summer
It was a campaign made in June 1964. Freedom Summer was created to give as many African Americand voting rights in Mississippi as possible. Freedom summer also made a lot of Freedom Schools, Freedom Houses, and community centers in small towns throughout Mississippi to aid the local black population. -
March on Washington
Was one of the biggest political rallies about civil rights. It happened in Washing D.C on August 28th, 1964. The walk was organized by civil rights activiststs and religious organizations and it was held to stops segregation and discrimination. -
Voting rights act of 1965
The voting rights act of 1965 outlawed discriminatory voting practices that had been responsible for the widespread disenfranchisement of African Americans in the U.S. -
Black Panthers
Were African-American revolutionary socialist organization active in the United States from 1966 until 1982. The Black Panther party was an organization to give African Americans more power in society. -
Dr. Martin Luther King JR & his assassination
He was and is known for the "I have a dream" speech. Which took place in Wachington D.C infront of the Lincoln Memorial, which was significant because Lincoln signed the Emancipation proclamation. He was assassinated as he was either walking in or out of his motel room and he was shot from above through hiss cheek and down his spine killling him in about an hour by James Ray. -
Sit ins & freedom riders
Sit ins where when people(civil rights activists) go into public places and sit doen and dont leave for a while. It was their way of protesting. It also did not only involve black people, white people also participated in sit ins but were harassed, beat up, possibly killed and made fun of for supporting African Americans.
