Spontaneous Generation

  • Francesco Redi Experiment

    Francesco Redi Experiment
He used uncovered and covered jars with flesh to show that worms only appeared in uncovered jars where flies could lay eggs.
Contribution: Questioned the idea of spontaneous generation of larger organisms.
  • John Needham Experiment

    John Needham Experiment
He boiled a jar with bacteria to sterilize and kill them and observe the spontaneous creation of new microorganisms
Conclusion: supported the spontaneous generation of microorganisms.
  • Lazzaro Experiment

    Lazzaro Experiment
The nutrient broth was cooked in closed and open flasks, and it was observed that no microorganisms appeared in the closed flasks.
Contribution: Provides evidence against the spontaneous generation of microorganisms.
  • Pasteur's Experiment

    Pasteur's Experiment
He designed the swan-neck flask with S-curved necks, where he cooked the broth, curved-necked flasks to prevent the entry of microorganisms. He don't observe life for a year, since he expose the flask to the air, when the forms start appearing
    Conclusion: Spontaneous generation successfully refuted.
