Qeubec padlock law

was a law that was created on Mar. 24, 1937, in the province of Quebec, that was born out of the growing fear of communism in Canada. the Law stated that the police could seal off and/or raid any property where communist activities were suspected; however this law served only to scare people of the police coming for them. -
Gouzenko Affair
Igor gouzenko was a russian spie stationed in the Russian embassy in Canada. When he found out that he and his family were scheduled to be sent back to Russia (by the Russian Government) he decided to defect to Canada. Igor shows the Canadian Government 109 documents about about Russia's plan to steal nuclear secrets and about the 39 spies already stationed there. 18 of the 39 spies are convicted and in thams for the intelliugence Igor and his family recieve RCMP protection. -
Berlin Blockade
The Berlin Blockade was set up by the soviets aroun the western side of Berlin to stop the people there from getting food and fuel from the allies which would in turn make the people there dependant on the soviets, thereby giving them control over the entire city. However the Allies set up airlifts to supply the people with supplies, and so on May 12, 1949, the blockade was lifted and the Allies regained control of the western side of the city. -
Nato
NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) was set up by the democratic countries in Europe and North america to help deal with the threat of a Soviet invasion. The Soviets retaliated by creating the Warsaw pact between the comunist European countries. -
The Korean war
Over the years there had been tension between North Korea and South Korea, then North Korea; aided by China, decides to attack South Korea. The UN sided with South Korea, but only 16 nations came to help. In 1953 a truce is called, but Canada stays until 1955 to help keep the truce. -
Vietnam War
North Vietnam attacked southern Vietnam, the US decided to help southern Vietnam; however Canada felt that it would be better to just let them fight it out. However there were many people in the US who didn't want to be part of the war so many of them moved to Canada so they wouldn't be part of it. -
Suez Crisis
When Israel was created there was much tension between it and the surrounding countries. Egypt attacked Israel and Israel struck back and took over some of Egypt,s land, In retaliation the egyptians took over the suez canal, an area, that was ofen used by the british for shipping. British try to take it back, but UN sides with egypt. Tension rises. Canada's secretary of external affairs; lester B. pearson, suggets UN peace keepers should be made to help ease the tension. -
Diefenbaker
When Diefenbaker first becomes P.M. he is considered great because he cuts taxes and raised pensions; howvever, as time went on he cancelled work on the Avro Arrow which was supposed to be supersonic interceptor jet, and instead had Bomarc missles made; however since warheads were illegal in canada, there uses were limited. This was not the only problem though, the cancelation of the Avro Arrow had cost 14 000 workers their job,s and so in 1963 liberals won the election. -
Sputnik
Sputnik is the first satelite released into space and is launched by the soviets. This causes tension because the spaceship that it was launched on was capable of being armed with a nuclear warhead. this was the first time missles were seen as a way to deliver nuclear warheads. Both sides start to build their own missles know as Bomark missles. -
NORAD and DEW line
Because of the threat of bomarc missles attacks from the soviets, Canada and the US created NORAD (North American Air Defense), then they had the Distant Early Warning system known as the DEW line built in the North-West Territories. this system used high powed radar antenae to detect incoming missles from the soviets from 4800 miles. Some Canadians become scared because they think Canada will become a target while others feel safe knowing they will know if the Soviets try to attack them. -
Cuban Missle Crisis
American spies spotted soviets building Bomarc missles in Cuba, so the US instantly imposed a Naval Blockade to stop Soviets from delivering the war heads until thankfully the Soviets left. -
Canada-Soviet Hockey Series
for years the NHL had been seen as a smaller league and no where as good as the leagues in Europe, but in 1972 they went against the Soviets in a series, and won, This caused much patriotism and was the begining of the NHL becoming big. -
Fall of the Berlin
The Berlin Wall was constructed in 1962 to seperate western and eastern Germany; however after a series of radical poliical changes in eastern Germany, it was anounced that Germany was to be reunified and the wall was torn down. -
Fall of the Soviet Union
Over the years the Soviets had been over spending on military projects and had had political crash after political crash, now in 1991 people wanted more freedoms and so elected there, then new leader; Boris Yeltskin, banned comunism and created the Commonwealth of Independant States. The Soviet Union was no more and the cold war was over.
