War against Japan
Russia and Japan fought for control of Korea and Manchuria. Japanese fleets destroyed everything Russia brought to war except three Russian ships. Instead of making Tsar Nicholas popular, the war made him look weaker and also made conditions worse for the peasants/working class (food shortages, lack of raw materials) -
Bloody Sunday
Went to the Winter Palace with a petition, but the soldiers open fired at them killing about 500 marchers and thousands wounded. This caused riots and strikes in Russia and many governement officials were murdered. The Bloody Sunday showed people that the Tsar was aware of the terrible situation they were in, but chose not to do anything about it. -
The 1905 Revolution
Crew overthrew officers and took over contrl of the ship (Potemkin). Peasants had rebelled in many areas by killing their landlords and burning don the farms. Georgians and Poles took the chance and declared idependece from Russia. Strike began in september whre factories, offices, shops closed down. People set up Soviets who became the alternative government, who the workers obey. -
October Manifesto/Introducion of Duma
WIthout any options, Nicholas established the October Manifest which talked about Russia having a "Duma" which is an elected parliament that will help citizens to run Russia. It gave peope basic rights (to form political parties, free speech). Fight started between the soldiers and revolutionaries when Nicholas didn't keep his word. The revolution ended in 1906 and ended with Russia establishing a parliament. Those who were against the government gained office, but this did not make a difference -
Peter Stolypin as Prime Minister
Peter Stolypin - Nicholas chose a prime minister to make sure there were no more revolutions. He had terrorists arrested and executed. 21,000 people were exiled that year. He helped peasants become owners of their land, so the redemption payment law had been abolished. Conditions (industry, wages, harvest) began to improve. Stolypin's agent's to stop terrorist shot him. -
Outbreak of WWI (2)
and ammunition almost impossible. People suspected Alexandra and Rasputin of conspiring against Russia as they were both German. Rasputin died but supplies of grain, coal, wood and oil almost became none. -
Outbreak of WWI
Badly lost against the Germ army. War continued through 1915 as Russian economy begins to collapse (lack of workers, not enough trains to tranport food to armies and townspeoplem food rotted away while people starved, supplies of coal halted --> more factories closed down). Roubles lost value, food prices went up and wages could supply less food. Alexandra left under control, and was under the influence of Rasputin. She sacked ministers and did what she pleased, causing obtaining of fuel
