    (APPROXIMATE DATE) Cortes had to leave temporarily to avoid arrest, so he left Pedro de alvarado in charge. he had his men massacre aztecs in their festival. the outraged Aztecs pushed his men back to the palace.

    Cortes managed to fend off the Spanish who had been sent to arrest him, with his Tlaxcalan allies. he was then to return to Tenochtitlan

    Moctezuma killed

    When Cortes returned, he convinced Moctezuma to go and speak to his people outside. Moctezuma was hit by stones and killed. Cuitlahuac was elected the new leader.

    The Aztec decided to surrender to the Spanish onslaught. Survivors were taken as slaves and the land was now renamed as New Spain.
