Spain’s ambassador,Senor Don Enrique Dupuy DeLome, sent the a letter slandering the spanish involvement in Cuba and US President McKinley. This caused an uproar causing him to resign. -
Sinking of the USS Maine
The USS Maine exploded and sank in Havana Harbor. 266 crewmen lost their lives in the incident. The sinking of the ship was one of the trigers of the Spanish- American War and was a result of Cubas struggle for independce from Spain. -
Attack on Manila Bay
George Dewey was given orders to attack the Spanish fleet in the Philippines should the US government would declare war on Spain. Dewey's modern steel squadron easily destroyed the againg Spanish ships without significant American losses. By winning the battle, they accuired the Philippenes. -
US Declaration of War on Spain
The United States declared war on Spain following the sinking of the Battleship Maine in Havana Harbor. The war lasted around 6 months. -
Battle of San Juan
This was one of the most bloodiest and most famous battle of the war. It was the greatest victory for the Rough Riders of which Theodore Roosevelt was apart of. Roosevelt was awarded the Medal of Honor in 2001 for his actions in Cuba. -
Treaty of Paris
The treaty did four things. It awarded independence to Cuba, held Spain responsible for the Cuban debt, ceded Puerto Rico and Guam to the United States, and sold the Philippines to the United States for $20 million.
