Ten Years War
When the Cubans rebelled against Spain in 1868 to 1878, Americans Sympathies went out to Cuban people. The war was led by Cuban planters and other wealthy Cubans. Nearing the end of the war, Spain bargained with the Cubans, saying that they would abolish slavery and let Cuba have more say in government. Cuba agreed, but it was years after the end of the war when slavery was finally abolished. -

The Yellow Press Shapes Americas Opinions With Respect The Cuban Civil War
The Yellow Press was made up of newspapers like New York World, and New York Journal. Many of the stories were over exaggerated accounts of war and its brutality. Some examples of these stories were that children were being thrown to the sharks, and wells being poisoned. All of these stories gained Americans sympathy for the Cubans. -
Publication of DeLome Letter
Enrique Dupuy de Lôme had written a private letter that was basically criticizing the president of the United States, William McKinley. In 1898, the letter was published to the New York Journal by a Cuban rebel. The New York Journal was always looking for a scandal so they gladly published the letter. The Spanish government apologized and soon after the prime minister resigned. -
The U.S.S. Maine Explodes
On February 15, 1898, at 9:40 P.M. the U.S.S. Maine had exploded, killing 266 U.S. sailors and injuring many more. This event was the breaking point for the U.S. Later in the year, April 20th to be exact, America declared war with Spain, who many Americans believed were responsible for the explosion. -
U.S. Declares War With Spain
The US declared war on Spain mainly because they hit the breaking point when the U.S.S. Main was destroyed. President McKinley met with congress and decided the US should go to war with Spain.
