    U.S Attempt to Purchase Cuba
    The American diplomats want to buy Cuba from Spain, but they first had to go tell the President Franklin Pierce about it. When President Franklin Pierce found out about it, he had went and asked Spain if we can buy Cuba from them. Spain had responded to the Americans by saying that they would rather see Cuba sink into the ocean.

    When the Caribbean war was happening, they would have the hostilities on the naval blockade of Cuba. The Spanish fleet was sealed up by Admiral William T. Sampson during the Cuban War, so that we can try and take Cuba from them. The Spanish had tried to escape Admiral Sampson, but it didn't work and he had destroyed the Spanish fleet by the naval blockade of Cuba.

    Since the first war wasn't successful, Cuba had decided to have a second war for independence. Marti was a poet and a journalist that had started the second war by deliberately destroying property. For help with Cuba Libre (freeing Cuba), Marti had been provoking the U.S intervention to help.

    The first war was about the Cuban's rebelling against Spain for there independence. It wasn't successful for the Cubans, so they had decided to force Spain to abolish slavery instead of trying to start a war, but the war had continued.

    The Yellow Press, two newspapers by William Randolph Hearst and Joseph Pulitzer, were articles that exaggerated what was happening in Cuba. Some of their headlines included ones on Valeriano Weyler calling him “Butcher” and telling of his actions to the Cuban people. Hearst said “You furnish the pictures and I’ll furnish the war,” after sending an artist to Cuba who came back saying that war between Spain and the U.S. seemed unlikely.

    Spain wanted to stop the Cuban's from rebelling because they were destroying everything. For that to happen Spain had sent General Valeriano Weyler to Cuba to stop the rebelling. Weyler had crush the rebellions and herded them to the entire central and western population to a barbed-wire concentration camps. Cubans did die from there from hunger and diseases.

    After Dewey defeated the battle ships he and the troops landed in Manila. The Filipinos, who also wanted freedom, joined with 11,000 American troops. The battle lasted a couple of months. In August Spain surrendered.

    The U.S forces had landed in Cuba and had began to converge the port city of Santiago.When we invaded Cuba we had made the Spanish surrendered, after we did that the Spanish had tried to escape from the U.S forces. The forces had decided that they was going to destroy the Spanish fleet.

    After our forces had destroyed the Spanish fleet at the end of the Cuban coast. The U.S had decided to invade Puerto Rico after the victory. The U.S had made Puerto Rico become a possession of the United States and it was during the Spanish-American War.

    For the war to end Spain and the U.S had went to Paris and had to sign a treaty. When they had signed the treaty Spain had gave Cuba to the U.S. The U.S also had Guam and Puerto Rico. Spain said that they would sell the Philippines to the United States for $20 million.

    After President McKinley tried peaceful ways to resolve the crisis Enrique Dupuy de Lôme wrote a letter that was stolen. Enrique Dupuy de Lôme, the Spanish minister to the United States wrote the letter about the President saying he was “a bidder for the admiration of the crowd,” and “weak.” The letter was stolen and published by the New York Journal and the Spanish government was embarrassed and apologized, Americans were still angry at the insults to their president.

    After the De Lome letter was published American citizens living in Spain were in danger as they tried to protect their land. President McKinley sent the U.S.S. Maine to Cuba to bring them back to America. In the harbor of Havana, the ship exploded killing more than 260 men. In a newspaper, it said that the ship was blown up by Spain which caused Americans to become outraged. The mystery of how it happened is unknown.

    After the U.S.S. Maine exploded “Remember the Maine!” became a cry for war. McKinley asked Congress to declare war on Spain on April 11 and after debating for a week congress decided to do it. On April 20 we declared war.

    Spain thought we would attack Cuba first but Americans went and attacked the Philippines. On April 30 American fleets came into range of the Philippines. The Commodore, George Dewey, ordered the fleet to take fire on the Spanish fleet in Manila. After destroying every Spanish ship American troops landed in the Philippines.

    The Rough Riders and two African-American regiments battled uphill to clear a way for the infantry to attack San Juan Hill. Roosevelt, who was part of the Rough Riders, was declared the hero of the battle in newspapers, though he only played a minor role with the defeat.

    After a Spanish fleet arrived in the harbor of Santiago they were blockaded by U.S. war ships. The Spanish were situated in their war ships so they could not be attacked or attack. They soon decided to escape but were stopped. One of the survivors were chased for 50 miles before they were caught.
  • Treaty of Paris

    Treaty of Paris
    The United States and Spain signed a ceasefire agreement on August 12. On December 10th the U.S. and Spain met in Paris to agree on a treaty. After talking things over Spain sold the Philippians to the U.S. for $20 million, freed Cuba, and gave the U.S. Guam, Puerto Rico, and the West Indies.
