Sinking of the USS Marine
This was the final straw in tension between America and Spain, and made America proclaim war on the Spanish for this treacherous act against American troops. 268 men were killed in the still unknown cause of the explosion of the ship(later realized that it was probably not the Spanish and most likely an engine room failure). -

Led by Theodore Roosevelt, the Rough Riders rode into the North-South elevated heights in Santiago de Cuba, Cuba, and defeated the Spanish in the bloodiest battle of the war. -
Treaty of Paris
This treaty stated that the Spanish surrendered Cuba, the Phillipines, parts of Guam, the Spanish West Indies, and Puerto Rico to American control.
