The DeLome Letter was written by Señor Don Enrique Dupuy de Lôme, the Spanish Ambassador to the US and was sent to Don José Canelejas, the foreign minister of Spain revealing De Lome's opinion of the Spanish involvement in Cuba and the US President's diplomacy. -

The Sinking of the USS Maine
On February 15, 1898 the US Naval ship USS Maine exploded as a result of an internal enginge combustion issue. This was not found out until later, however and it was blamed on the Spanish resulting in the initiation or start of the war. -
US Declaration of War on Spain
On April 25, 1898 the United States declared war on Spain for the mistreatment of Cubans during the Cuban revolution against Spain. This resulted in the Spanish American War which ended in a decisive victory for the US and allowed for the US to expand territory and become an imperialized nation. -
Attack on Manila Bay
On May 1, 1898 the American Squadron under George Dewey engaged and destroyed the Spanish Pacific Squadron under Patricio Montojo. The battle took place in Manila Bay in the Philippines, and was the first major engagement of the Spanish-American War. -
Battle of San Juan Hill
The Battle of San Juan Hill occcured on July 1st, 1898 and it was a decisive battle in the Spanish-American war. This fight for the heights was the bloodiest and most famous battle of the war and was where the Rough Riders gained publicity, including Theodore Roosevelt. -
Treaty of Paris
The Treaty of Paris, which occured on December 10, 1898 signified the end of the Spanish-American War. It marked one of the quickest and most decisive victories for the Americans and granted the United States it's first overseas empire.
