FRANCOIST REGIME
Francoism was the name given to the suthoritarian regime imposed by General Francisco Franco in Spain between the end of the civil war in 1939 and 1975.
Bases of Francoism:
Anti liberalism and antin comunism
Nationalism, centralism and catholicicsm
Franco established a dictatorship, all power was in his hands. -
FISRT DECADES DURING THE REGIME
1939-1959
Franco established the Fundamental Laws of the Realm: a law which regulated the political life, as well as economic and labour relations. These laws replaced the Republican constitution -
FOREING POLICY DURING THE REGIME
International isolation (1946-1951): The victory of the allies didn't benefied Spain because Franco had some relations with the Nazi Germany, Spain was excluded from the UN for beein a dictatorship and also was excluded from the Marshall Plan. The UN imposed economic and diplomatic embargo on Spain as well.
International integration (1951-1962): The Western bloc countries became more favourable towards the regime, caused by the Cold War, they apreciated Franco anti-communism. -
LATER DECADES
1959-1975
It became more technocatic: politicians which technical training became more prominent. The objectve of the regime was to modernise the country.Franco appointed specialists from various fields as ministers, including economics, health and education. He designed Juan Carlos de Borbón as his successor -
THE TRANSITION (1975-1979)
Began with the death of the general Francisco Franco in 1975.
Juan Carlos de Borbón was named king of Spain, a democratic sysem was established.
Adolfo Suarez was named prime minister

The amnesty law(1977)
Legalisation of all political parties
In 1977 first democratic general election was held. The UCD led by Adolfo Suarez won the election. -
THE 1978 CONSTITUTION
This constitution was written in the cortes.
Main characteristics:
Spain is a constitutional monarchy
The monarch is the head of state and chief of the armed forces.
Sovereignty resides with the people and there is a separation of powers: - legislative powe is held by the cortes Generales,
-Executive power is held by the goverment,
- Judicial power is held by the courts.
Declaration of rights: right to work, right to participate in politics and freedom of ideas and expression. -

Various terrorist groups:
ETA:( Euskadi y libertad): creation in 1968, 829 people murdered, 20 October 2011 ETA rennounced armed struggle.
GRAPO( Grupos de resistnecia Antifascistas Primero de Octubre): 87 deaths, paramilitary wing of the reocnstruited Spanish paty's 1975 conference
Terra Libre(Tierra libre): Called Catalan Independence: Founded in 1978, 200 attacks and 5 deaths. Dissolved in 1991. -
THE ATTEMPED MILITARY COUP OF 23 FEBRUARY 1981
A group of civil guards led by Antonio Tejero entered in the Congress of Deputies and took the deputies hostage. The coup failed because the institutions and the monarch did not support it.
