    Sputnik was a satellite sent into space by the Soviet Union. Thsi step into space led to people going into space.

    Pioneer Program

    The program was to send unmanned space craft to study ionizing radiation, magnetic fields, and Jupiter. Pioneer 0 exploded 77 seconds after launch. The mission was run by NASA.

    Venera

    Soviet mission to Venus. they sent 16 probes but not all of them actually made it to Venus. They were the first to send back color pictures of Venus. Designed to float on Venus's nonexistant oceans.

    Mariner Program

    This mission was to take pictures of Mercury, Venus, and Mars. The mission has the most detailed pictures of mars. 3 mariners crashed because of launching problems. the pictures that were taken took 4 days to get back to Earth.

    The Gemini Spacecraft was launched on April 8, 1964. The Gemmini spacecraft held two people and was named after the Gemini constalation. The spacecraft was desined t take people into space.

    Viking Missions

    The viking missions were led by James Martin. The mission was to send two probes to monitor Mars, Viking1 and 2. There was an orbiter and a lande for the mission. This was the first mission to mars. The first picture taken during the mission was of the landers foot to see how far it sunk into the ground.
  • Voyager Missions

    Voyager 2 launched on August 20, 1977.
    The missions were to explore out side the solar system and the sun's influence. Both went in seperate directions and the mission is ongoing. They used radioisotope generators for power.

    The space shuttles are The Atlantis, the Challenger, the Columbia, the Edeavor, and Discovery. They were designed as a reusable way to go to space and come back. They have been used on 135 missions

    Galileo Spacecraft

    the Galileo Spacecraft was sent to Jupiter to learn about it. The mission was done by the European space agency and NASA. it learned about planets and moons and how they were made.
  • Hubble Space Telescope

    Made by NASA and the European Space Agency. The telescope was designed to learn about stars being born and stars dying. the telescope generates more than 360 gigabytes of data a month. The telescope is still in space and operating today.

    N.E.A.R.

    N.E.A.R. stands for Near Earth Asteroid Mission. The mission was to study the Asteroid Eros. The spacecraft landed on Eros, took samples and used x-ray.

    Cassini

    This mission was to explore Saturn and its moon Titan. it cost 3.3 billion dollars. Cassini sent down a lander called Huygens to land on Titan. Huygens only transmitted data for 90 minutes. The mission will continue un til 2017.

    End date is wrong the poroject is still going. The ISS is the 9th spacestation. The space station was assembled module by module in space 15 space agencies use the ISS. The space station uses solar panels for power.

    Genesis Spacecraft

    The spacecraft was designed to collect solar wind. the reason to collect solar wind was to find out what materials exist in the sun. This was the first mission to use plasma spectrometers.

    Mars Exploration Rover

    The two rovers were sent to see if there possibly ever was life on Mars. The rovers found iron and water on mars. Water is needed for life. They did not find life but the water was a sign that there might have been life. The rovers were called Spirit and Oppurtunity.
