This satellite was created by the Soviet Union and was launched from Baikonur Cosmodrome at Tyuratam in Kazakhstan. The launch of this satellite started the space race and also shocked the world.

The name " HAM" is an acronym for the lab that prepared him for the mission. After Ham was launched into space his capsule was recovered by a rescue ship. Ham had a bruised nose but overall was in good condition. After the mission Ham lived for another 17 years in the National Zoo in Washington D.C.

He was a pilot in WW2 and also attended a pilot school. He was apart of the " Friendship 7" and was the oldest man to venture into space on Oct. 29, 1998.

Surveyor 1 was the first lunar soft-lander in a program for NASA. This succesful mission landing helped to gather data needed for further Apollo missions that NASA was planning. Surveyor 1 gathered data by taking pictures of the moon with a television camera that would later help the Americans greatly.

Apollo 11 launched carrying Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins. The famous quote "...one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind." Came from Armstrong as he became the first man to step on the moon. This mission is probably the most famous space mission within that time for it was successful and memorable.
