Sputnik 3 is launched by the Soviet Union
This was the second attent for the Soviet to send Sputnik 3 into space. The first attemp was in April 27. The satellite carried a tape recorder to mesure the Van Allen radiation belts but failed to work. The satellite also carried instruments for a geophysical research. Suputnik lasted for 692 days and in April 9,1960 the satellites orbit decayed. -
NASA is founded
National Aeronautics and Space Administration was established to replace National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA). It did not beacome operational until October 1st of that year. -
Launching of Pioneer 4
Part of the Pioneer program and became the first U.S. probe to leave Earth's gravity. Passed 60,000 km of the moon's surface causing it to enter solar orbit. Was still in orbit in 1969. -
Luna 3 is launched to outer space.
A Soviet space craft brought back poor quality pictures of the far side of the moon. On the western world it was also know as "Lunik 3". The space craft was in outer space for 207 days. Two days after lunch the space craft flew over the lunar south pole. -
John Glenn orbits the moon three times.
Glenn was the first in the Friendhip 7, which was one of the flights in the Mercury Atlas 6 mission. He orbited the earth three times lasting a 4 hour flight. -

Was the first communication satellite launched into space. The satellite the first to transmit television waves along with the first phone call that was broadcasted in space. -
Vostok 6 is launched into outer space
Vostok 6 was the first spaceflight that took a women into space. It was also said that Valentina Tereshkova was the first human in space. This was also the last spacecraft from the Vostok 3KA design. -
Alexei Leonov administration the first spacewalk
Alexei Leonov, a USSR Air Force Major General, was the first to conduct and spacewalk which lasted for about 12 minutes in the Voskhod 2 flight. -
First American spacewalk
During the Gemini 4 mission Ed White came to be the first American to administration a spacewalk. The spacewalk was during the third orbit which at that time he was above Hawaii and lasted about 23 minute which came to an end above the Gulf of Mexico. -
First successful rendezvous
The Gemini 6A and Gemini 7 crafts completed the first succesful Rendezvous . Gemini 6A was in control of Wally Schirra while the Gemini 7 spacecraft was beingmaneuvered by Frank Borman and James Lovell. -
Landing of Gemini 12
Gemini 12 was the last and 10th flight of the Gemini program for the US. It was launched in November 11. The flight laster 3 days and orbited 59 times. The pilot of the flight was James Lover while Edwin Aldrin was the co-pilot. -
The lunch of Soyuz 1
The Soyuz 1 was a spacecraft with Vladimir Komarov. This flight was the first of a serious of soacecrafts. While the spacecrafft was returning to Earth problems in the spacecraft caused Vladimir's death. -
Marine 9 is lunched to orbit Mars
A NASA spacecradft that helped the US explore Mars. The spacecraft landed in Mars on November 13 of the same year. Marine was in orbit for 349 days in Mars. The spacecraft sent over 7,329 images of Mars. They also recived an image of Olympus Mons the largest volcano in the solar system. The spacecraft was turned off in October 27,1972. -
