Monkey In Space
The U.S.S.R. launched a monkey into space on June 11, 1948. The monkeys name was Albert. The monkey died on the way up to space. They launched Albert into space befor they tried to send a human into space so they could see if humans could survive the trip up into space. -
Sputnik 1 Launch
The U.S.S.R launched the satillite Sputnik 1 before the U.S. could do it first. The US was very disappoitned to be second to launch a satellite. Sputnik 1 was important because it was the first artificial satellite to be put into Earth's orbit. -

The U.S.S.R. sent dogs into space to see if the travel up into space was safe or not. The dog's name was Laika. Laika was a female. Laika died within the hours after the launch, She was over heated. The reason the U.S.S.R use dogs was because they were easy to train. -

Yuri Gagarin, from the U.S.S.R., was the first man to go into Outer Space and orbit the Earth. He was in spacce over the night. He launched at 9:07am and he returned the next morning. He was the first Russian man to explore the atmasphere of space. -

Alan Shepard was the first U.S. man to go up into space. He was in space for 108 minutes. This was a big accomplitment for the U.S. Space program. -

John Glenn was the first U.S. man to orbit the earth. He was up in space for 4hours, 55 mins, and 23 seconds he came back that day. They were in a race with the U.S.S.R, so they used John Glenn, to be the first U.S. man to orbit the earth. -

Valentina Tereshkova, from the U.S.S.R. was the first women to go up into space. Valentina was up in space for three days. Then she came down out of space. When Valentina Tereshkova went up into space tit was a big ccomplishment, to be the first women to be in space. -

Alexei Lenvo, from the U.S.S.R. was out of the space craft for 12mins and 9 seconds. He was the first man to space walk. When he was out of the space craft he was "floating" in space. -

Ed White, from the U.S. walked in space for 23 minutes. Ed White was the first person from the U.S. to "float" in space. -
Gemini 7
Gemini 7 was a rocket. Gemini 7 was launched into space for 13 and one half days. Gemini 7 was very important because It was the 4th manned Gemini flight, the 12th manned American flight and the 20th spaceflight of all time and the first to link up with another space craft Gemini-6A in space. -
Apollo 8
Apollo 8 was the first space flight to leave Earth's atmosphere. Apollo 8 left the Earth's atmosphere and orbitted the moon staying up in space for 147 hours. Apollo 8 circled the moon ten times. Apollo 8 the second crewed mission in the American Apollo space program. -
First Man To Walk On The Moon - from the U.S or anywhere
Neil Armstrong was the first man too walk on the moon. Apollo 11 was in space for 4 days and they stayed on the surface of the moon for 21 hours and 31 minutes. Buzz Aldrin came out of the rocket after Neil, he was the second man to walk on the moon. They left an American flag, that was pushed into the moon's surface. They brought back 47.5 pounds of Moon rocks.
