First liquid feuled rocket
U.S. rocket scientist Robert H. Goddard launches the first liquid feuled rocket from his aunts farm in Massachusetts. The 4- foot tall rocket is only in the air for 2.5 seconds, but paves the way for the U.S. rocket program.

First American Designed
The U.S. launches its first American-designed rocket. Known as the Wac Corpral, the rocket reaches the edge of space at an altitude of 50 miles after being launced form New Mexico.

First live animal in Space
the Soviets launched a Sputnik 2, the spacecraft contained a pressurised container that housed a dog named Laika. Laika lived for 8 days until the food suply ran out, and proved that animals could survive in space. -

Survieing Animals
Korabl-Sputnik-2 (Spaceship Satellite-2), also known as Sputnik 5, was launched. On board were the dogs Belka ( Squirrel) and Strelka (Little Arrow). Also on board were 40 mice, 2 rats and a variety of plants. After a day in orbit, the spacecraft's retrorocket was fired and the landing capsule and the dogs were safely recovered. They were the first living animals to survive orbital flight.
