In 1903 Konstantin Tsiolkovsky found out that for rockets to be able to escape Earth's gravity it needed a liquid fuel.

German scientisc Hermann Oberth helped to launch the German V2 rocket

Sputnik was the first artificial satellite put into orbit in which triggered the space race.
