    Galileo’s discoveries
    In 1609 Galileo Galilei using his “spy glass” (a device to make things look closer using glass) to make the first discoveries about space. He discovered that the moon had craters and mountains like earth, and the sun has sunspots and lightspots. He also discovered that the planets orbit the sun as well as Jupiter having moons orbit it.

    In 1781 William Herschel was studying stars at the time he discovered Uranus by accident. The astronomer While studying stars noticed that there was something closer to us that was not a star, he assumed it was a meteorite but after close investigation with his telescope he discovered that it was in fact a planet.

    Edwin Hubble in 1924 discovers that the spiral nebula is a galaxy past the Milky Way. Using Hubble’s 100 inch reflecting telescope he discovers more galaxies past ours.
  • V-2 Missile

    V-2 Missile
    The V-2 missile was the first launched rocket but it was not the first in space. The V-2 was lead by the scientist Von Braun during WWll and started the space race. The V-2 had three previous attempts to launch before the fourth one didn’t malfunction. The rocket shot 6 miles into the air before tipping and shooting into the ground.

    Sputnik was the first man made satellite to orbit earth. Sputnik was created by the Soviet Union and was launched in 1957 and was thought to be spying on other countries, because it was launched at the time of the space race.

    Explorer 1
    The US Army during the space race created the Explorer 1, the first american satellite to orbit earth. The explorer one is the first successful satellite after many failed attempts. The explorer one is around the size of two basketball and is used to detect rays on earth.
  • TRIOS-1

    TRIOS-1
    the trios-1 is a weather satellite launched in 1960 by the Radio Corporation of America. The trios was a fully functioning satellite for 78 days before it no longer worked. It is used to tell the weather by studying the clouds.
  • First man in space

    First man in space
    Yuri Gagarin was the first man in space in 1961. Yuri was on the Vostok Spacecraft launched by the soviet union. Yuri was launched during the space race.
  • First man on moon

    First man on moon
    After JFK challenged NASA to have man step on the moon they completed the challenge in 1969. Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin were the first two men to walk on the moon from the Apollo 11. They were launched during the space race and this was one of the few advantages the US had from the other countries.
  • Venus Landing

    In 1970 the Soviet Union landed the first man made object on another planet. Venera 7 was the rocket they used to study Venus’s temperature and atmosphere. Venera 7 did not last long due to the atmosphere and temperature burning it up and crushing it
  • First women in space

    In 1993 Sally Ride was the first American women in space, while in the challenge mission STS-7. Sally Ride held experiments and helped with deployment of communication satellites.

    The challenger in 1983 blew up 73 seconds after take off. There was a crew of 7 people and one member was going to be the first teacher in space. The Challenger exploded due to an internal tank explosion.

    The Hubble telescope was created in 1990 by NASA and was named after an important cosmologist, Edwin Hubble. The Hubble telescope is used to take pictures of the universe from space because of earths atmosphere makes the pictures blurry.
  • Mars Pathfinder

    Mars Pathfinder
    The mars pathfinder was a robotic rover created by Jet Propulsion Laboratory in 1996, to learn about mars's climate, geology, rocks and soil. The mars pathfinder outlived its original lifespan and gave more data then scientists anticipated.
  • International Space Station

    International Space Station
    The international space station was manufactured by 9 different space industries from across the globe. Its in low earth orbit and it has an average of 10 people on at a time. The ISS is a science lab and a home for scientists for 6 months at a time.
