    Was a late 16th century attempt by Queen Elizabeth I to establish a permanant English Colony. Unfortionatly, the final group of colonists dissapeared during the Anglo-Spanish war, calling the colony: The Lost Colony
  • Virginia Colony Founded at Jamestown

    Virginia Colony Founded at Jamestown
    After the death of Elizabith the First and a long war with Spain, England was pressed for finances. Many of their natural resources were exhausted. This caused them to consider alternatives in the New World, and eventually King James charted two competing branches to go there; the London Company and the Plymouth Company. The London Company was the one who arrived at Jamestown.

    Rolfe, husband of Pocahontas, showed the virginia colonists how to grow tobacco. This became a main sourc eof income in the southern states for many years after.

    Lord De la Warr started the first Anglo-Powahatan war. But, he was defeated the first time by the English Army. Later, he would start the Second War that would be ended by the marrage of Pocahontas and John Rolfe. The Powahatan are thought to be extinct.

    First Africans Arrive in Jamestown/Virginia House of Burgesses established
    The London Co. authorized the settlers to gather an assembly, known as the House of Burgesses. This was the meeting place for discussions and legislation in act for the colony. Although later, King James, through lack of trust, would put in act his own sort of loegislation. Also, the first Africans arrived.

    Maryland Founded by Lord Baltimore
    Calvert received a Charter from Charles the first of England for the new colony of Maryland, to be named for the Consort Henrietta Maria. This was shortly after the death of his father, the First Baron Baltimore, who had long sought the charter to found a colony in the mid-Atlantic area to serve as a refuge for English Roman Catholics.

    Act of Toleration in Maryland
    Allowed fair treatment of Christians by diferent type. Mostly Catholic. The terms of the Act of Toleration within the British colonies in America were applied either by charter or by acts by royal governors. The ideas of toleration as advocated by Locke became accepted through most of the colonies even in the Congregational strongholds within New England (which had previously punished or excluded non members of their church).     North Carolina Founded by Virginians
    In 1663, King Charles the Second issued a royal charter to eight nobles to settle the area south of Virginia. They created Carolina and included the previous settlement. However, because of internal problems, the crown took over the colony and formed North and South Carolina out of it in 1729.

    It was a code that helped protect the slaves from cruel punishments, although it also denied many funamdental rights to slaves.

  • Georgia Colony Founded by Oglethorpe

    Georgia Colony Founded by Oglethorpe
    , James Oglethorpe was given a charter from King George the Second to create a new colony which he would name Georgia. It had two main purposes: to serve as a place where debtors in prison could go to start anew and it served as a barrier against Spanish expansion from Florida.
