South Africa - Segregation

  • Initial conflict between races

The whites putting their farms over Khoi grounds and in effect creating conflicts and fights between the two races. They later introduced passes and simple laws to keep them under control. As they already had guns and stronger weaponry, they got to power almost instantly and easily put their own laws in their own favour, leading to segregation. However, no major wars or conflicts occurred until 100 years later when passes and laws were officially introduced.
  • Darwinism

When the Dutch arrived to S. Africa, they thought of themselves as smarter and more technologically advanced than the native blacks. This led to them pushing the natives away from their homeland and keeping the land for themselves. However, when the british arrived to S. Africa, they then saw themselves as better than the dutch AND the native blacks. This led to segregation as overtime, laws and rules would fall on the whites favor as they saw blacks as animals with minimal technology.
  • Mining industry

After gold and diamonds were found in South Africa, This brought a lot of attention from European countries that wanted the minerals for themselves. As tax systems were recently introduced, life started to get expensive and made black people get a job and pay for their taxes (many of them worked in mines at a minimum wage for the whites, who were their supervisors). This led to segregation as white people would always have better jobs and purposely have a better life than the blacks.
  • Jobs

After the mining industry was introduced, jobs started becoming much less diverse for black people (with only being allowed to work in minimum wage jobs). This made them stay stuck as the poorer class as there was no way for them to earn any more money and achieve the same level of status as the whites. This led to segregation as the whites would always have better jobs and a better life due to the law being on their favor.
  • Land Ownership

When the british reached to total power, they decided to give the native blacks specific cropping areas away from urban life. This led them to be incapable of making a living out of farming crops. Eventually forcing most blacks to move into suburban areas where they would work in mines and factories. After their farming land was significantly reduced, the british were able to manipulate and control the blacks into being desperate for a better life and work in labour jobs for the whites.
  • Urban life

As gold was introduced as a currency, many blacks had to move into urban areas to work in mines and factories. However, they still weren't allowed to vote or live in the same neighbourhoods as whites (no matter how poor) as the whites had the power to vote and live separately from the blacks and live in nicer areas. This led to segregation because blacks and whites were separated due to their skin colour and also didn't have the right to vote to make a change.
