Anarchy and a Fragmented Country
Throughout the 1990s, the country was driven deeper into anarchy and became less unified by several years of war. Al-Shabab, a terrorist sect, took over most of the southern regions. -
Somaliland Formed by Northern Regions
Northern regions of Somalia avoided anarchy and established their own independent republic. However, Somaliland is not recognized by the UN as an independent country. -
Creation of the Transitional Federal Government
The Transitional Federal Government is the current governing body of Somalia. However, the government has little rule outside of the capital of Mogadishu. -
Creation of a United Government?
The Transitional Federal Government has had assistance from the United Nations. However, by summer of 2012, there are supposed to be general elections and a stable government in power.
