For as long as man has lived people would use all available resources for roofing. One that was used often was sod becase it was stable and good insulation but it was not waterproof. Clay tiles were used in 100AD by the Romans and Greeks but were used in China up to 5000 years ago. They are good because they let water run right off of them. Thatched Roofing
Thatched roofing was made of materials like straw and reed and was very cheap because it is made of common natural materials. Wooden Shingles
Wooden shingles were created 300 years after thatched roofing to prevent fires. They also were better at keeping out rain than thatched roofing did because the water will run off the wood because of the shape. Thatched roofing it was easier for water to seep through it. Solar Shingles
In 1998 Subhendu Guha invented flexibal solar shingles. They use a different type of solar cells that are cheaper than the type that is used for normal solar panels.
