Old Regime Remained in Place
In this system, people were divided into 3 social classes (estates). The first, second and third estates. First estate was for Catholic Church, second for the rich and third for the poor. -
Meeting of the Estates General
King Louis had no money left so he was going to increase taxes on nobility. But, the second estate forced him to do a meeting with a representative of each estate to get a solution. -
National Assembly
Voted to end the absolute monarchy and instead establish representative government. -
Fall of Bastille
People got together to bomb bastille (a prison) and to leave all the prisoners out which for them is like the 4th of July in USA. Because they were now free. -
Liberty and Equality
Noblemen made big speeches about their love in liberty and equality. -
Royal Family Tries to Escape
The royal family tried to escape from France to Netherlands but in the border they were returned to Paris. People had mentioned to them that they where in danger so thats why they tried to escape. -
Limited Monarchy
National Assembly completed the new constitution and it was approved by King Louis. It created a limited constitutional monarchy. And the legislative assembly could create laws and approve or reject declarations of war. -
War
European countries saw this new changes and feared that the same might happen in their country so they took action and a war started. -
Robespierre Takes Control
He slowly gained power and tried to wipe everything from France's past. He governed France as a dictator and that time he was governing was known as the Reign of Terror. -
Reign of Terror Ends
Robespierre went to the guillotine and killed himself. That made the French public opinion shift and new leader to make a plan of government. In 1795, they found Napoleon Bonaparte, the right leader to govern France.
