    Created by cofounders Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger in October 2010 as a minimalistic approach to posting images and short videos. Instagram as become one of the starting social media platforms that helped launch the "influencer" era.
  • Snapchat

    Snapchat
    Snapchat was invented by Reggie Brown, Bobby Murphy, and Evan Spiegel. Its use was to create images that would disappear after immediately opening. This was where we we are first introduced to image filters. One of the most popular filters included the puppy dog face. Now adays most social media platforms that use photography or video include some type of media filter.

    Vine
    Created by Dom Hofmann, Rus Yusupov, and Colin Kroll Vine was the first social media platform to create short film content consumerism. Up until this point, Youtube was the main platform for video sharing. Videos were usually between 3-5 minute. This platform shortened that time frame to 15-30 second films that users could quickly consume. This is where we first see the concept of creators acceptably copying trends in videos and using audio bytes such as "What's 9+10" and "Harlem Shake""
  • Discord

    Discord
    The concept of Discord was created by Jason Citron. The idea was to create a social media platform for gamers where they could video chat, voice call, and send messages. Other platforms that were available before then were Skype and Teamspeak. They weren't always easily accessible and often times costed money.. Discord created a place to easily manage and organize communities in different spaces and has become recognized as a useful communication tool outside of just gaming.

    Although released in 2016 in China, TikTok was not officially released to the international market until September of 2017. TikTok originates from a previous app called musical.ly. Musical.ly originally was developed, similar to vine, where users could create short videos however the idea was usually lip syncing or musical. TikTok content originated from this idea but the more popular it became the more "For You" content users were able to receive due to an algorithm that is tailored to users.
