The World Wide Web, or Web 1.0, was created by Tim Berners-Lee. The website allowed you to access information, but did not really enable you to interact with others.

Amazon

Jul 5, 1994

Founded by Jeff Bezos. Amazon was originally created as an online book store. Eventually Amazon expanded to selling DVD's, CD's, and Blu-rays. Today Amazon allows you to buy pretty much anything you want, and has created their own music site, and video streaming. The website officially launched in 1997.

Yahoo!

Jan 18, 1995

Yahoo! was founded by Jerry Yang and David Filo. The site was created as a guide to direct users to other websites. Today Yahoo! is still one of the top search engines in the world.

Six Degrees

May 1, 1996

Technically the first social media site ever created. The website was created by Andrew Weinreich. Users created a profile and connected with friends, and later users were given the ability to write messages and blogs. Website lasted until 2001.

Google

Sep 4, 1998

Google was founded by Larry Paige and Sergey Brin. It was first created as a multinational technology company. Today, Google is the second most valuable brand in the world valued at $107.4 billion.

Wikipedia

Wikipedia was created by Jimmy Wales ans Larry Sanger. It was created as a free online encyclopedia, in which the public has the power to put in and take out information.

Myspace

Myspace was created by Tom Anderson and was considered the first ever social media profile website. Today, it's popularity has decreased due to the creations of Twitter and Facebook. Myspace is now used for musicians to promote their music.

Facebook was created by Mark Zuckerberg and his college roommates. Created as a social netwroking service, it has boomed into one of most popular sites on the internet, and continues to expand across the world.

YouTube

YouTube was founded by Chad Hurley, Steve Chen, and Jawed Karim. YouTube allows users to set-up an account and create, or post videos for the public to view.

Twitter

Twitter was founded by Jack Dorsey, Noah Glass, Biz Stone, and Evan Williams, in San Francisco, California. The social networking site allows users to send and read 140 character messages. Today, next to Facebook, it is seen as one of the top social media sites in the world.

Tumblr

Tumblr was created by David Karp. Its a microblogging platform and social networking website. The site allows users to post multimedia and other content to a short-form blog.

Instagram

Instagram is an online mobile photo/video sharing social network site. Founded by Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger, the social media site is on the same platform as Facebook and Twitter.
