Black lives matter started in 2012 and is still going strong today. It started with the death of Travyon Martin when he was shot by a police officer. People have been using Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram with the hashtag #BlackLivesMatter to protest police brutality against black people. -
#Kony2012
Kony 2012 started with a viral video that was spread across Facebook informing people, and trying to stop Ugandan cult militia leader Joseph Kony from forcing Invisible Children to fight in his army. Many also changed their profile photo to spread awareness. -
#IceBucketChallenge
In the summer of 2014, the ALS association created a challenge to raise money for research towards Lou Gehrig's Disease. It was spread primarily through Facebook, and participants would dump a bucket of ice water on their head, and challenge a few friends to do the same. If they failed to do the challenge within 24 hours, they must donate to the cause. -
#LoveWins
2015 was a big year for the LGBT+ community when gay marriage was legalized in the US. This law that was passed must have been heavily influenced by the amount of supporters on social media. People would change their profile photo to have a PRIDE filter, and use hashtags such as #LoveWins, #MarriageEquality, and #NoHateOnlyLove. -
#MeToo
Sparked by sexual harassment allegations against producer Harvey Weinstein, millions of women and men have come forth and shared their stories of being sexually abused or harassed using the hashtag #MeToo. Stories have been shared on all outlets such as Twitter, Youtube, Instagram, and Facebook.
