  • Missouri Compromise

    Kept the number of free states and slave states equal.
  • Formation of Free-Soil Party

    Their goal was to keep slavery out of the western territories
  • Compromise of 1850

    1) Allowed California to enter the Union as a free state
    2)Divided the the rest of the Mexican Cession into the territories of Mexico and Utah
    3)Ended slave trade in Washington , D.C.
    4)Included a strict fugitive slave law
    5)Settled a border dispute between Mexico and Texas
  • Kansas-Nebraska Act

    A proposal that the Nebraska Territory be divided into two territories; Kansas and Nebraska
  • Uncle Tom's Cabin

    A novel written by Harriet Beecher Stowe to show the evils of slavery.
  • Formation of the Republican Party

    A gruop formed by Free-Soldiers, northern Democrats, and antislavery Whigs.
  • Bleeding Kansas

    A band of proslavery men raiding the antislavery town of Lawrence was the catalyst for turmoil between pro and anti slavery in Kansas; 200 people were killed
  • The Dred Scott Case

    A court ruling on a on a case that involved an enslaved man named Dred Scott, that caused further division of the North and South.
  • John Brown's Raid

    Brown led a group of his followers to Harper's Ferry, Virginia. There he planned a raid of a federal arsenal, and followed through with it. He was sentenced to death.
  • Election of 1860

    Abraham Lincoln won the election for the North against John Breckinridge for the Southerners.
