1830-1860
A movement to abolish slavery in America gained strength in the northern United States, led by free blacks such as Frederick Douglas and white supporters such as William Lloyd Garrison, and Harriet Beecher Stowe, who published “Uncle Tom’s Cabin”. -
1860
1860 convinced many Southerners that slavery would never be permitted to expand into new territories acquired by the US and might ultimately be abolished. Eleven Southern states attempted to secede from the Union, precipitating the Civil War. -
1861-1865
The Civil War began
with the Confederate versus the Union (North vs. South) -
1865
The 13th Amendment was adopted and slavery was now abolished and illegal. Which gives Slaves the choice to go to school and gain knowledge.
