Slave Code
many states had a slave code, but it was all different in each state. what a slave code was back then was a list of rules restricting slaves from certain things, and have certain objects in their hands. if a slave were to break one of these rules, their masters would punish them by what their slave code says. -
Free African-American slaves
in 1860 there were many free slaves all over the nation. they were able to buy their freedom by their masters, but as time went on it was rare for slaves to buy their freedom. a new way for slaves to get their freedom was by manumission. back then manumission was just a voluntary emancipation by a slaves master.
