First Slaves Arrive in America

This was the date that the African Slave Trade was banned. The act did not become effective until this date. -

This was the agreement. that decided that the North states would be free states and the Southern states would be slave states. -

The second Fugitive Slave Act allowed runaway slaves to be recaptured and returned back to their owners. -
Compromise of 1850
When California entered the US they wanted to enter as a Union state, but that would upset the balance of free states and slave states. As a result, we compromised. -
Uncle Tom's Cabin Published
Harriet Beecher Stowe wrote the book, "Uncle Tom's Cabin", to promote anti-slavery. The book was very popular. -
Kansas-Nebraska Act
This act allowed the people within the states of Kansas and Nebraska to decide if they wanted to be a free or slave state. -
Dred Scott vs Sanford Supreme Court Case
This was when a slave tried to go to court for his freedom. The court did not let the slave have its freedom though. -

John Brown’s Raid on Harper’s Ferry was an effort to have an armed slavery revolt. -
Bleeding Kansas
A border war that decided if Kansas was going to be a free or slave state.
