civil war begins
the civil war begins when the south succeds from the union. the south then called themselves the confederate states of america. the northern states remained and called themselves the union. the first battle started at fort sumter. the union controlled border states and set up naval blockades to prevent the south from going any further. -
robert e lee takes control
march 15, 1862 after facing several losses the south decides to elect a man much more fitted for the job. there had been fighting in southern parts of virginia and leaders of the south decided it was time to put hime to the test. but the following year lee would lose his general stonewall jackson to friendly fire severly hurting the southern forces. this is important because it shows the south pushing back. it also shows lee had good leader ship. -
emancipation proclomation
the emancipation proclomation is issued freeing all slaves but not including the border states and took effect 1/1/63. this also allowed free slaves to fight in the war and there was even a regiment of african american soldiers. this is important because it allows the union to have more soldiers and for the people of the north to be more motivated. this also changed public views on how the war was going as well -
battle of appomattox court house
this was the final battle between the union and confederate soldiers. the union had pushed them back and the confederates were fighting in and around the court house. towards the end the confederates had no choice but to wave the flag and surrender. this is important because it marks the end of the war. it also showed who that the war was bloody and tiring to americans.
