The First Ideas About Skylab
Skylab was an idea first proposed in 1960. The idea was to use technologies developed during the moon missions to create a lab in space that astronauts would use to study how the human body reacted to a null g environment. -
Skylabs Launch
This is the date of Skylab’s launch. During the launch airflow caused a meteoroid shield to come off, tearing off one of two solar panels and preventing the other solar panel from deploying. -
First Crew
This is the date that the first crew arrived at Skylab. Due to the problems during Skylab’s launch, the first crew had to get the solar panels working and then they had to cover the place that the meteoroid shield had been with reflective foil so that the crew would have normal temperature levels. -
The Return of the First Crew
This is the date that the first crew returned to earth. This date is important because it is when the world was shown that men could go live in space successfully. -
Skylabs Second Crews Departure
This is the date that the Second crew launched into orbit. The second crew’s mission was to continue maintenance of Skylab as well as conducting medical experiments. -
The Return of the Second Crew
This is the date that marks the second crews return to earth. In total the second crew spent almost sixty days in space. -
The Launch of Skylabs Third Crew
This is the date that marks the launch of the third crew. The third crew was the last crew to see Skylab. The biggest accomplishment of the third crew was the observation of the comet Kohoutek as well as numerous experiments. -
Skylabs Last Crew
This is the date that Skylab’s last crew left it. Skylab was to stay in space for another eight to ten years after the last crew left it, but to unusually high solar activity, which caused its orbit to decay. -
The Return of the Third Crew
This is the date of the return of the third crew. The third crew spent almost eighty four days in orbit, which to the date was the longest time that a human had been in space. -
Skylad's death
This is the date that Skylab re-entered earth’s atmosphere and burned up. In total Skylab was host to three crews over a span of six years.
