    in the battle of tannenberg the germans took out a huge portion of the russian army. this majorly crippled russia. because of the russian invasion of prussia the russian army was split in two. the germans took this advantage and killed 30,000 russians while a measly 12,000 german soldiers. not to mention the 92,000 russian soldiers captured.

    the second battle of ypres was important because. One the belgian town of ypres was a strategically important town. dangerously close to france. secondly it was the first time the germans use chemical warfare on a mass scale. while it did backfire due to the wind pushing some gas back to the germans it was proved effective. At ypres, britain suffered 59,275 casualties, french 10,000, canadian 6,500 and 34,933 german. the allies held on to the town but lost valuable high ground nearby.

    ¨Battle of Gallipoli¨ was actually a campaign launched by the allies against the ottomans. thousands of australian and new zealand solider descended upon a beach in the Gallipoli peninsula after a long and heavy bombardment by some allied behemoths. the allies eventually pulled out of this campaign after an approximate 250,000 casualties on each side. this is considered a military failure for the allies but this failure brought attention to the ottomans from the big 3 of the allies.

    the battle of verdun took place on the western front of france. The germans where trying to crush the french army before it could fully mobilize. it is by far considered the 2nd deadliest in ww1 with an estimated 800,000 deaths only second to the battle of somme. the germans suffered 350,000 casualties while france had 400,000. despite this france won but gained very little ground.

    the battle of jutland was important for a few reasons. For one it was really the only full scale naval battle of the war. it was also one of the last naval battle fought primarily with battleships. This battle was also significant because the british fleet denied germany access to the northern sea and the atlantic. the british lost 6,097 men losing 14 ships. While the germans lost 2,551 men and 11 ships even though they lost this battle.

    the brusilov offensive was an offensive lead by the russians. The offensive was one of the deadliest offensives in history. They launched this offensive into the eastern front and drew attention away from verdun. Another reason this offensive is important is that romania joined the war as an ally because of the offensive. Russia suffered anywhere from 500,000 to 1 mil casualties. austria suffered between 1 million to 1.5 mil. germany suffered 148,00-350,000 casualties. the ottomans had 12,000.

    the battle of somme is by far and wide the deadliest battle in ww1 with an estimated 1 million casualties. the british and french planned to draw attention away from and relive there allies at verdun. 1 million casualties for 6 miles at somme this set the tone for the western front, it showed any land would be hard fought for. its thought that the british had; 420,000 casualties; the french 200,000 and the germans at least 450,000 casualties.

    Battle of Passchendaele happened in ypres same place as the second battle of ypres which despite the victory caused a stalemate. the battle of ypres while not significant tactically, it is culturally significant. due to heavy shelling and enormous amounts of rain the battlefield was muddy, this caused many malfunctions this battle became a symbol for the senseless slaughter of ww1. canadians lost 16,000, germany 220,000, britain 275,000 and some 90,000 bodies where never found, lost to the mud.

    Battle of Caporetto, germany and austria-hungry attacked italy near the isonzo river. the german/austrian army tore through the italian front lines using storm troopers and toxic gas. the sheer magnitude of their losses during the battle lead to may italians deserting or willingly surrendering. this is widely considered the worst defeat in italian military history. the italians had 40,000 soldiers killed 280,000 surrender and 350,000 deserted. the german-austria army only had 50,000 deaths.

    the battle of cambrai was significant for (besides the mass slaughter of humans) 2 reasons. one it was the first large scale use of tanks deploying 476 tanks; while they proved effective there faults where made clear as well. it was also the first american battle in ww1. the result of this battle was ultimately a stalemate with the british initially gaining ground but being pushed back by the germans afterwards. britain suffered 40,000 casualties and germany suffered 45,000 casualties.

The germans would change up targets making it appear that they had no plan. the germans gained a bunch of ground although the british line did not fail.this might sound like a victory when america came all german progress was undone. germany had 348,000 casualties, britain 177,739, and france 77,000.

    this was the final major german offensive of the war. it was a huge success for the allies pushing germany back with an effective counter attack. this was considered the turning point of the war and basically decided the rest of the war giving the allies a ton of momentum which they never let go. germany suffered 168,000 casualties while the big 3 of the allies only suffered a combined 121,717 casualties.
