Significant Literacy Experiences

  • Kindergarten

An early introduction to reading. I'm sure we had sight words and talked about sounds.
  • My first book!

My mom purchased a book about a girl who was running for class president, this was the first book I read from cover to cover!
  • Fourth grade

I started having issues with school, specifically around reading and reading comprehension.
  • Fifth grade

I was placed into a class at school that would pull the children who had trouble with reading comprehension and give them tools to help them with reading.
  • Scholastic Book Fair

This book fair sparked an interest in reading for me. It had so many different books that I typically didn't have access to so I always looked forward to the Scholastic Book Fair!
  • Middle School

I made a point to try to read for at least 30 minutes before I went to sleep each night.
  • High School

I absolutely dreaded summer reading. I wasn't interested in any type of reading at this point
  • College Part 1

I never read any of the texts books and dropped out soon after being frustrated by all of the reading.
  • Oprah's Favorite Things

On her list of favorite things one year, Oprah named a book written by Jay-z. He had written an autobiography and since Oprah liked it, it was obviously a good read so I picked it up and started reading for fun again.
  • College Part 2

I still have difficulty reading and retaining information. I usually have to read things 3-4 times before I move on to something else, but I'm used to it now.
