Native Title Act
This followed the Mabo Decision, giving aboriginal people fair and equal rights. -
Australia Enters the Afghanistan War
Airstrikes by US and British forces begin on targets in Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom. Australia joins Canada, Germany and France in pledging future assistance. The Afghanistan War is still being fought to this day. -
Australia Enters the Iraq War
Australia became involved because the conservative Liberal Party government of John Howard decided that Australia should support its ally, the United States. Australia is the only country to have fought alongside the US in every war in which the US has fought in the twentieth century.
