Democritus and his mentor, Leucippus thought that all mass was made of what they called "Atoms". They thought that the particles were what gave the mass certain properties. -

Aristotle
Aristotle didn't agree with Democritus so when he died, Aristotle and Socrates took the 4 elements idea and this was what a lot of people agreed with for just under 2000 years, -
